On September 3, 2024, ColdSpark® held a successful workshop as part of the Progress in Biogas VI conference in Stuttgart, Germany. Bringing together scientists, practitioners, and industry experts, the event showcased cutting-edge research and practical solutions in biohydrogen production, emphasising ColdSpark®’s role in advancing clean energy technologies and the possibility for their adoption in Germany.
The workshop highlighted ColdSpark®’s role in advancing clean energy technologies and featured the technology as a viable solution for Germany’s energy transition. Four thought-provoking presentations were delivered, each offering unique insights into the latest research of ColdSpark® leading partners:
- Terje Hauan from SEID AS challenged participants with the question, “Can Clean and Low-Carbon Hydrogen Ever Become a Reality in Germany?” His presentation offered a deep dive into the current hurdles and potential opportunities for scaling hydrogen technologies.
- Prof. Xin Tu from the University of Liverpool introduced “Plasma Electrification for Power-to-X: A Promising Solution for the AD/Biogas Sector,” showcasing how plasma technologies could revolutionize anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas production.
- Sanjay Gopaldas from the University of Stavanger captivated participants with his discussion on “Biomethane Pyrolysis: A Green Route to Ultrapure Carbon and Sustainable Nanomaterials,” exploring sustainable pathways to value-added materials.
- Isabella Bulfaro from IREC wrapped up the session by unveiling ColdSpark®’s innovative life cycle assessment methodology in her talk, “Unveiling ColdSpark®: A Life Cycle Assessment Methodological Framework for Evaluating Environmental Performance.”
Moderated by Katrin Kayser from IBBK, the workshop was well-received by the audience, sparking interesting discussions on the future of hydrogen technology within the biogas sector. Participants left with a deeper understanding of ColdSpark®’s groundbreaking work and a clear sense of how biohydrogen production can play a pivotal role in Germany’s and Europe’s sustainable energy transition.
The strong interest and engagement during the workshop reaffirmed ColdSpark®’s commitment to driving innovation in clean energy, while aligning with the broader goals of the Progress in Biogas conference — bringing science and practice together to push the boundaries of technology towards a greener, more sustainable future.
